During this Christmas rush, one of the things I received in the mail for review was an amazing genealogy tool (as well as conversation piece) called the “Pocket Tree”.  I had been anxiously awaiting its arrival, not knowing quite what to expect.  When my husband brought the mail, I was looking for a larger package.  To my surprise, the small brownish envelope which triggered my wonder contained MY POCKET TREE!

Slipping it out, I was intrigued and happy that it was so thin.  It appeared to me that it would be very easy to slip into my purse because it would hardly take up any space at all.  I opened it to see heritage-oriented pictures.  I then opened each side once more to discover a layout of things to consider when “Preserving Your Family History”. This section was concisely and specifically designed as an aid for interviewing family members when gleaning information pertinent to preserving family records.  There were 5 points listed under “Things to remember when questioning your family member” followed by 39 recommended questions that would be oh-so-helpful in conducting an interview! Already I could see this would be an incredibly handy resource, since I have interviewed family members for family history purposes.  When doing so in the past, I struggled to make sure I was asking ALL the things I really wanted to have recorded.  This list will substantially simplifiy that task.

The pages were already extended, so I lifted the bottom edge of the paper upward, and, there it was—the 9-Generation Ancestor Chart with a clear explanation of where to write the names of someone’s spouse!  I relished the idea of filling out the chart (which includes spaces to write birth, marriage, and death dates and places), and I marveled at so much power-packed information included in such a tiny tool.  It is, indeed, handy, functional and easy to use.  I can see how it’s compact, portable size would make it an ideal tool to use in research settings, yet I am enthused as I anticipate the conversations it will spark at family occasions.  I believe that family members, who may not be otherwise involved in family history, could have their interest peaked while seeing the information contained on the Pocket Tree. Being known as Family Tree Gal, I like the idea of carrying my Family Tree with me all the time.
