About Here's a little more information about Carolyn and Dr. Ronald A. Newsom. Dr. Ronald A. Newsom The late Ronald A. Newsom, Ph.D., MFT passed away on September 28, 2017. He was Carolyn's mentor, colleague, and friend. Ron served 23 years in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was privileged to serve in the Strategic Air Command and was a B-52 Aircraft Commander and Flight Instructor. He received his Master of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado and his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University—where he was asked to continue as a teaching professor in the same program. Ron became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and served as Director of the Liahona Counseling Center in Arizona. He was the well-loved and acclaimed founder of the Liahona Light Institute of which the Liahona Light Academy was it’s online extension. He loved to help people discover and heed the “Liahona Light” within themselves. Dr. Newsom referenced the name “Liahona”--which was an ancient compass that helped people navigate through unknown territory. The name Liahona Light Institute reflected his understanding of the need for both direction (provided by a compass like the Liahona) as well as light to see their way in the world, His teachings adhered to basic universal truths and principles that are found in the Holy Scriptures and in other great philosophies around the world. Affectionately called “Ron” by his friends and clients, he was dedicated to facilitating in individuals the rediscovery of their innate, inner worth or “true identity”. Desiring to help others in their quest for happiness, he enthusiastically taught, developed and promoted fabulous presentations to help individuals develop positive relationship skills with themselves and others. Through implementing his teachings, highly frustrated or deeply discouraged men and women could get safely out of comfort zones and move on to new, happier beginnings. They learned how to think and act with positive intent regardless of the circumstances they would encounter. Ron was a man of integrity who cherished family relationships. He was a man who understood the ups and downs of implementing principle-centered living. He did his best to live his life in harmony with the principles he taught, and yet he realized no one is perfect, and he could chuckle at his own human flaws. His candor in such matters added to his endearing presence. Those who knew Ron found him to be delightful, consistent, unselfish, encouraging, positive, compassionate—and found his teachings to be empowering.
