"Preserving Your Family History"
"I then opened each side once more to discover a layout of things to consider when “Preserving Your Family History”. This section was concisely and specifically designed as an aid for interviewing family members when gleaning information pertinent to preserving family records.  There were 5 points listed under “Things to remember when questioning your family member” followed by 39 recommended questions that would be oh-so-helpful in conducting an interview! Already I could see this would be an incredibly handy resource, since I have interviewed family members for family history purposes.  When doing so in the past, I struggled to make sure I was asking ALL the things I really wanted to have recorded.  This list will substantially simplify that task." --GeneaBlogger, Carolyn Murphy

Sample questions include:
  • What are your parents and siblings names, birthplaces, and birthdates?
  • Can you describe their personalities?
  • What can you remember about your home growing up?  Can you describe the layout?  Your neighborhood?
  • What modern conveniences did you have--or not have?
  • How did your parents meet?
  • What was your first job?  Car?
  • In what school activities did you participate?  Any highlights?
  • What was the most valuable thing you learned from your parents?
  • If you could have had a different profession in life, what would it have been?  What stopped you?
  • How did you choose your children's names?
  • I am proud of my parents because...
  • I am proud of my children because...

At this point, you may be thinking one of two things:

  1. I don't need this much space on my chart.  I'm only in my 5th generation.  At some point, you will grow your family tree.  With all the new information being digitized on an ongoing basis, more information is available every day.  With the Pocket Tree, you will simply add on as the need arises.
  2. I can go way past 9 Generations so this chart isn't large enough for me.  The last section of the chart (see above, far right, blank area) is exactly for that purpose.  No portable tree can give you enough spaces for every person in your family tree at this point.  However, many of us only have a few ancestor lines we can take past the 9th Generation.  This open/blank space allows you to carry the few lines you have into that space, by bracketing them next to their appropriate 8th Generation ancestors.
Note from founder and owner, Rhonda Earley:
"My personal chart allows me to carry three ancestor lines that
I can take into 14 Generations.  They are all listed exactly
where I need them, and I can add--or erase--when I need to.
I can place birth and death dates, and locations as well.
My Pocket Tree grows when I need it to."
