The AmazingFlip-Pal™ mobile scanner.
Is it for YOU?

If you are looking for a way to digitally store photos, images in books, magazines, and works of art from a scan that’s reliable, clear and convenient, then the Flip-Pal™ mobile scanner is for YOU!

In preparation for my presentation, “Unlock the Mystery to Writing YOUR History, at the upcoming ANWA Writer’s Conference (February 25-26, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Phoenix Airport Hotel), I received a Flip-Pal™ mobile scanner for review and to use in my class.  This impressive, portable, battery-powered flatbed scanner is about the size of a net book computer (10.25″ x 6.5″ x 1.25″).  It is lightweight (1 lb. 4.5 oz. (580 gm) without batteries) and can easily scan pictures without any connection to a computer.  I was impressed that it was fully equipped with everything it needed to work right out of the box. (4-AA Batteries, a 2 GB SD card and a USB to SD adaptor, stitching and color restoration software, window protector sheet, and Quick Start User Guide are included with the unit.

I was ready to put its claims of easy use to the test!  My long-time friend, Sharilyn Wilson, joined me as I opened the box.  After reviewing the simple instructions, we placed a 4” x 6” picture on the scanner, pushed the green button and “viola” it worked perfectly and was done so quickly that it amazed us.  We watched the LCD screed as it displayed a thumbnail of the scan in progress and later showed thumbnails of scanned images stored on the SD card. Then, we decided to use one of the cutting-edge features that make the Flip-Pal™ mobile scanner so popular—the patented flip-and-scan technology.

We removed the top cover and placed the scanner face-down and scanned several images.  This feature allows images to remain on a wall, in a family picture album or in a book, for instance, when the scan is done.  The unit is truly a time-saver.  Sharilyn commented that it’s certainly faster than scanning from her computer.

The images we scanned were stored on the SD memory card (like the ones in my digital camera), so we used the USB to SD adaptor to connect to my laptop computer, and we uploaded the pictures to my image collection in the Heritage Collector software on my laptop computer.  The images were very clear, and we were both delighted.  I now look forward to creating collections that I can share with my friends and family.  With this scanner, I understand that photos or art which is larger than the scanner can be “stitched” together to duplicate the original, but we did not experiment with that feature.

I can certainly see the usefulness of this vital tool for memory makers and those who want to keep the memories alive through pictures. It is an excellent tool for scrapbookers, genealogists and family historians.  I will use it often because of my physical challenges.  I can see that those with back or spinal pain will now be able to sit, in the comfort of their easy chair, and scan pictures for extended periods of time.  Imagine how easy it will be to take on trips and capture some of the precious photos that family members or friends have to share with you.  This tool will also be useful at family reunions.

The Flip-Pal™ mobile scanner made its debut in July 2010.  Since then, genealogists have been buzzing about getting one or loving the one they’ve received as a gift or the one they purchased.  I read a review by a genealogy enthusiast who had tried other mobile scanners, and she said this one was the best by far.

The Flip-Pal™ mobile scanner is offered by Couragent, Inc. (formerly Rocky Mountain Ventures, Inc.) who has built their foundation on the high core values of Courage, Integrity, Collaboration, Innovation, and Care. A one-year limited warranty is included with purchase.

The scanner sells for under $150.00.  Orders can be placed online. CLICK HERE for more info.

The Flip-Pal™ mobile scanner definitely surpassed my expectations for its claims of ease of use as well as for quality and versatility.  I HIGHLY recommend it.
