I became acquainted with Legacy Family Tree Genealogy Software two years ago at the Family History Expo in Mesa, AZ.  My interest was peaked when I spoke to a Mesa AZ resident who purchased the product and was highly impressed with its merge options and split-screen views, as well as its mapping capacities.  Since then, I have heard rave reviews from users all over the country and abroad.  I must say that after using the product, Legacy (version 7.5) was all it claims to be.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reviewing this software, noted significant and beneficial improvements from the former 6.0 version and enjoyed its ease of use and easy-to-follow instructions.  I give it a rating of five gold stars.

More about Legacy Family Tree Genealogy Software

Millennia Corporation (founded in 1984), publishes the award-winning Legacy Family Tree software.  It is a fantastic resource to use to record data and produce a record of your ancestry.

Although it’s lists of features are too numerous to mention, among those of interest are:

  • Import your genealogy chart or add a new one from scratch.
  • A complete source citation system is included for documenting the sources of information following industry standards (footnotes, endnotes, and bibliography).
  • Legacy includes questions to use when interviewing family members to help you capture precious memories.
  • There’s a handy To-Do list that lets you enter tasks you would like to be reminded of.
  • Up to six Family/Pedigree View windows can be opened at the same time.
  • You can easily copy people from one file to another using Legacy’s Drag-and-Drop feature.
  • Life events are easy to add to an ancestor’s file.
  • Privacy settings are available.
  • A variety of formats are offered for customizable wall charts.
  • Print wall charts and books with no additional program or add-on required.
  • One of few genealogy programs with themed backgrounds offered.
  • Video tutorial support
  • Microsofts Virtual Earth tool can be used to show your ancestors migration path or to see important locations in your family history.
  • Supports windows 7, windows XP, windows Vista

Being known as “Family Tree Gal” on the Internet, I took a special interest in Legacy’s customizable wall charts.  My motto is, “In every home, frame a family tree to strengthen your posterity”.  I could hardly wait to install the program and click on the screens to see how to create “family trees” which were suitable for framing.  Needless to say, it was the first feature I investigated.  I was not disappointed.

Just as they advertise, I found it easy to use and extremely versatile as to styles.  You can choose from ancestor, descendant, fan, hourglass, bow tie, and even DNA charts. Their customization features let you choose the number of generations, the box contents, pictures, color themes, backgrounds, box borders, and much more.  These charts would make a beautiful addition to any home or family reunion.

As founder of Family Tree Quest, I also strongly promote writing personal and family histories.  When writing your family story, these added features are helpful in organizing ideas and information and are well worth the investment in purchasing the program:

  • Research Guidance
Mapping - maps all of the places a person lived on satellite and bird's eye maps,  Location database of over 3 million places
Historical timelines from around the world
    DNA markers
    record your DNA findings
Chronology View, Descendant View, and Index View
Use name list and Relationship Calculator.
Legacy lets you compare 2 files for duplicates, and, as stated before, the software includes questions to use when interviewing family members to help you capture precious memories.  It has an outstanding calendar feature and lots of benefits with its uses of pictures and sound.

To see a more complete list of features, you’ll find them under the “Legacy” tab on their home page.

Legacy is available in two editions.  There is a limited-feature, free edition which is available for download.  It features anniversary reminders, Free tips and support.

There’s a 4 generation limit on wall charts in the free edition.  (Deluxe edition is preferable).

The Deluxe edition begins at the affordable price of $29.95.  Bundles are also available, one of which includes a thorough 336-page user’s guide and training CDs.

I highly recommend this software for anyone needing to organize and publish their family records. I believe Legacy Family Tree software to be one of the best genealogy software programs on the market.
